Hungarian Lesson 24 · C1

Causative and Formal Writing

Here are two model letters: a formal complaint to a company, and a semi-formal email to a teacher. Use them as patterns for your own letters.

A formal complaint

Anna has received a bill that is too high. Notice the plural Önök, because she is writing to a company, and the very formal szíveskedjenek.

Tárgy: Hibás számla

Tisztelt Ügyfélszolgálat!

Azzal a kéréssel fordulok Önökhöz, hogy ellenőrizzék az októberi számlámat. A számlán 12 000 forint szerepel, holott a szerződésem szerint a havidíj 8000 forint. Mellékelten küldöm a szerződés másolatát.

Kérem, szíveskedjenek a hibát kijavítani, és a különbözetet visszautalni a bankszámlámra.

Válaszukat előre is köszönöm.

Tisztelettel:

Subject: Incorrect bill

Dear Customer Service,

I am writing to ask you to check my October bill. The bill shows 12,000 forints, whereas according to my contract the monthly fee is 8,000 forints. Please find attached a copy of the contract.

I would ask you kindly to correct the error and to transfer the difference back to my bank account.

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Yours faithfully,

Anna Kovács

  • ellenĹ‘rizzĂ©k: the subjunctive of ellenĹ‘riz after hogy, with z + j becoming zz (Lesson 21).
  • holott: "whereas, although". It is more formal than pedig.
  • szerepel: literally "appears, features". In formal writing it is the usual word for what a document "says".
  • a kĂĽlönbözetet visszautalni: "to transfer back the difference". Utal is the banking word for "transfer".

A semi-formal email

Tom is writing to his Hungarian teacher. He uses Kedves, because he knows her, but he still uses the polite 3rd person.

Kedves Tanárnő!

Sajnos holnap nem tudok részt venni az órán, mert orvoshoz kell mennem. Szeretném megkérdezni, hogy elküldené-e nekem e-mailben a házi feladatot. A következő órán természetesen pótolom a lemaradást.

Köszönöm a megértését!

Üdvözlettel:

Tom

Dear Teacher,

Unfortunately I can't come to the lesson tomorrow, because I have to go to the doctor. I wanted to ask whether you could send me the homework by email. Of course I will catch up on what I miss in the next lesson.

Thank you for your understanding!

Best regards,

Tom

  • rĂ©szt venni: "to take part", from rĂ©szt vesz. With a class or a meeting it takes -n: rĂ©szt vesz az Ăłrán.
  • elkĂĽldenĂ©-e: the little -e after a verb turns it into an indirect yes/no question, like English "whether": megkĂ©rdezem, hogy jön-e (I'll ask whether he is coming).
  • pĂłtolom a lemaradást: "I'll make up what I missed".
