Text 1: A news report
This is written in the style of a short article on a news website. Notice how impersonal it is, and how carefully information is attributed to a source.
Új könyvtár nyílt Pécsen
A new library opens in Pécs
Szombaton új városi könyvtár nyílt Pécs belvárosában.
On Saturday a new city library opened in the centre of Pécs.
Az épület két év alatt készült el, és csaknem hárommilliárd forintba került.
The building took two years to complete and cost nearly three billion forints.
A polgármester szerint a könyvtár nemcsak az olvasóké, hanem a város minden lakójáé.
According to the mayor, the library belongs not only to its readers but to every resident of the city.
Az új épületben a könyvek mellett kávézó, játszószoba és egy nagy terem is helyet kapott, ahol koncerteket és előadásokat fognak tartani.
As well as books, the new building houses a café, a playroom and a large hall, where concerts and lectures will be held.
Az igazgató tájékoztatása szerint a megnyitó napján több mint ötezer látogató kereste fel az intézményt.
According to the director, more than five thousand visitors came to the library on its opening day.
Egyes látogatóknak állítólag egy órát kellett várniuk a bejáratnál.
Some visitors reportedly had to wait an hour at the entrance.
A könyvtár mindennap tíztől nyolcig tart nyitva.
The library is open every day from ten until eight.
A kölcsönzéshez olvasójegy szükséges, amelyet a helyszínen ingyenesen lehet igényelni.
To borrow books you need a library card, which you can apply for free of charge on site.
Notes
- nyílt: the past of nyílik (to open, intransitive). Compare nyit (to open something). Hungarian headlines are often in the past tense where English uses the present.
- két év alatt: alatt with a length of time means "within, in the space of".
- forintba került: "cost (forints)". Kerül with -ba/-be is the usual way to give a price: Mennyibe kerül? (How much does it cost?)
- nemcsak az olvasóké, hanem ... minden lakójáé: two -é forms (Lesson 19): "not only the readers', but every resident's". Lakója is "its resident", and -é lengthens the final a.
- helyet kapott: literally "got a place". Journalists use it to say that something "is housed" somewhere.
- fognak tartani: the future with fog + infinitive (Lesson 14). Here the subject is "they", unnamed people, which is how Hungarian avoids a passive.
- az igazgató tájékoztatása szerint: "according to the director's information". Szerint (according to) is in almost every news article.
- kereste fel: from felkeres (to visit, call on), a formal word. The prefix is after the verb because több mint ötezer látogató is in focus.
- állítólag: "reportedly, allegedly". The journalist did not see this personally.
- kellett várniuk: kell + personal infinitive (Lesson 15), "they had to wait".
- tíztől nyolcig: -tól and -ig (Lesson 20). Nyitva tart is the standard phrase for opening hours.
- olvasójegy: a compound with the participle olvasó (reader): "reader's ticket". lehet igényelni: "one can apply for", an impersonal construction.
Text 2: A personal essay
This is a short reflective piece, of the kind you might read in a magazine column or a blog. The style is personal but carefully written.
Vasárnapi ebéd
Sunday lunch
Amikor Budapestre költöztem, nem értettem, miért olyan fontos a magyaroknak a vasárnapi ebéd.
When I moved to Budapest, I didn't understand why Sunday lunch is so important to Hungarians.
A kollégáim minden hétfőn arról beszélgettek, ki mit evett vasárnap az anyjánál vagy a nagymamájánál.
Every Monday my colleagues talked about what each of them had eaten on Sunday at their mother's or their grandmother's.
Húsleves, rántott hús, krumplipüré, a végén pedig sütemény: a menü szinte mindig ugyanaz volt.
Meat soup, breaded schnitzel, mashed potatoes, and cake at the end: the menu was almost always the same.
Aztán egyszer egy barátom meghívott a családjához Kecskemétre.
Then one day a friend invited me to his family in Kecskemét.
Háromórás ebéd lett belőle, és a végén alig tudtam felállni az asztaltól.
It turned into a three-hour lunch, and at the end I could hardly get up from the table.
A nagymamája folyton azt kérdezte, miért eszem olyan keveset, pedig már a harmadik tányérnál tartottam.
His grandmother kept asking why I was eating so little, even though I was already on my third plate.
Akkor értettem meg, hogy ez az ebéd nem az ételről szól, hanem arról, hogy a család együtt van.
That was when I understood that this lunch is not about the food, but about the family being together.
Ma már nekem is hiányzik, ha egy vasárnap kimarad.
Today I miss it too if a Sunday goes by without it.
Ha valaki megkérdezné, mi a legmagyarabb dolog, amit ismerek, valószínűleg azt felelném: a vasárnapi húsleves.
If someone asked me what the most Hungarian thing I know is, I would probably answer: Sunday meat soup.
Notes
- ki mit evett: "who ate what". Hungarian can put two question words side by side, which English can't: Ki mit hoz? (Who is bringing what?)
- az anyjánál vagy a nagymamájánál: possessive + -nál, "at their mother's or their grandmother's" (Lessons 16 and 19). The singular anyjánál refers to each colleague in turn.
- Húsleves, rántott hús: the classic Hungarian Sunday menu. Rántott is the past participle of ránt (to coat in breadcrumbs and fry).
- Háromórás ebéd lett belőle: "it turned into a three-hour lunch". Lesz valamiből means "to become, to turn into": the starting point is in the elative.
- alig tudtam felállni: alig (hardly) with tud + infinitive. The prefix stays on the infinitive because alig takes the slot before the verb.
- a harmadik tányérnál tartottam: tart valahol means "to be at a certain point": Hol tartasz a könyvben? (How far have you got in the book?)
- Akkor értettem meg: akkor (then) is in focus, so the prefix meg follows the verb (Lesson 22).
- szól valamiről: "to be about something". Miről szól a film? (What is the film about?)
- Ma már nekem is hiányzik: hiányzik works like tetszik: the thing missed is the subject, and the person who misses it takes -nak/-nek.
- megkérdezné ... felelném: an imagined "if" sentence, with the conditional in both halves (Lesson 21). Legmagyarabb is the superlative of magyar: "most Hungarian".
Text 3: A short story
This is the opening of a short story. Literary Hungarian uses longer sentences, participles and the -va/-ve form to build atmosphere.
A ház a tó partján
The house by the lake
A ház a tó partján állt, messze a falutól, és az ablakai nyugatra néztek.
The house stood on the shore of the lake, far from the village, and its windows looked west.
Amikor Lilla hosszú évek után kinyitotta a kaput, az ugyanúgy nyikorgott, mint gyerekkorában.
When Lilla opened the gate for the first time in many years, it creaked just as it had when she was a child.
A kertben ugyanazok az almafák álltak, csak most már öregek és görbék voltak.
The same apple trees stood in the garden, only now they were old and crooked.
Az ajtó nem volt bezárva.
The door was not locked.
Belépett, semmihez sem nyúlva, és megállt a szoba közepén.
She stepped inside, touching nothing, and stopped in the middle of the room.
Az asztalon egy csésze állt, mintha valaki csak egy perce ment volna el.
There was a cup on the table, as if someone had left only a minute ago.
A faluban azt beszélték, hogy a nagymamája utolsó éveiben éjszakánként a tóval beszélgetett.
In the village people said that in her last years her grandmother used to talk to the lake at night.
Lilla ezt sosem hitte el.
Lilla had never believed it.
Most azonban, az ablaknál állva és a hullámok hangját hallgatva, hirtelen megértette, miért tette ezt a nagymamája.
But now, standing at the window and listening to the sound of the waves, she suddenly understood why her grandmother had done it.
Notes
- a tó partján: "on the shore of the lake". Part (shore, bank) takes the possessive and -n: a Duna partján (on the bank of the Danube).
- messze a falutól: messze (far) takes -tól/-től, "far from".
- nyugatra: "to the west". Directions take -ra/-re for "towards": északra, délre, keletre.
- hosszú évek után: "after long years", that is, "for the first time in many years".
- az ugyanúgy nyikorgott: az here is a pronoun, "it" (the gate). Hungarian uses az to point back to a thing just mentioned, when ő would sound as if it meant a person.
- ugyanazok az almafák: ugyanaz (the same) agrees in number with its noun, so it is plural here.
- nem volt bezárva: van + -va/-ve, a state (Lesson 23).
- semmihez sem nyúlva: "touching nothing". Nyúl valamihez means "to touch, to reach for". Hungarian uses double negation: semmihez sem, literally "to nothing not".
- egy perce: "a minute ago". The possessive of a time word means "ago": két éve (two years ago).
- mintha ... ment volna el: mintha (as if) + the past conditional is the literary way to say "as if (someone) had".
- utolsó éveiben: possessive plural + -ben, "in her last years" (Lesson 19). Éjszakánként: -nként, "at night, night after night" (Lesson 20).
- állva ... hallgatva: two -va/-ve forms describing what Lilla was doing at the same time (Lesson 23).
